Stone paper, also known as rock paper or mineral paper, is a type of paper made from calcium carbonate derived from limestone or marble waste, combined with a small amount of non-toxic resin as a binder. It's an eco-friendly alternative to traditional wood pulp paper because it doesn't require trees for its production. The process of making stone paper involves grinding down the calcium carbonate into a fine powder, mixing it with the resin, and then forming sheets through a process similar to traditional papermaking.
Stone paper is a completely non-toxic, biodegradable alternative to paper. It is suited for many types of printing including offset lithography and screenprint. True to the name, Stone paper consists mostly of calcium carbonate, a substance found in rocks and is completely tree-free. The paper will degrade safely, without the exhaustion of harmful gasses, and be completely gone in 9 to 12 months if left in nature. It can also be easily burned without the release of harmful gasses.

Features:
1. Eco-friendly: Since it doesn't require trees for production, stone paper helps reduce deforestation and the pressure on natural forests.
2. Water and tear-resistant: Stone paper is highly durable and resistant to water, tearing, and grease, making it suitable for applications where durability is essential, such as outdoor signage, maps, and menus.
3. Recyclable: Stone paper can be recycled with other types of plastic materials, although the recycling process might require special facilities due to the resin content.
4. Smoother surface: Stone paper tends to have a smoother surface compared to traditional paper, which can result in better print quality for certain applications.
5. Waterproof: Because of its composition, stone paper is naturally waterproof, making it suitable for applications where moisture resistance is important, such as outdoor signage and labels.
Despite these advantages, stone paper also has some limitations. It's not suitable for all types of printing, and its production process may involve energy-intensive steps. Additionally, concerns have been raised about the environmental impact of the resin used as a binder, although efforts are underway to develop more sustainable alternatives. Overall, stone paper offers a promising eco-friendly alternative for certain applications, but like any material, it's important to consider its full lifecycle and environmental implications.
